The future of the chicken processing plant in Louisiana just got a little more secure. The Louisiana legislature passed a huge mega-bill that included $50 million dollars to keep the Farmerville plant open. The Shreveport Times has more:
The proposal moved unusually fast, but supporters of Jindal's deal said speedy passage was needed because the Pilgrim's Pride plant is scheduled to close within days. While the Jindal administration worked out a deal for Foster Farms of California to buy the plant and reopen it, that accord hinges on the state putting up $50 million from the mega-fund."This is an investment important for economic development, for northeast Louisiana in particular," Jindal said after watching the House action on the side of the chamber.
The deal will save about 1,300 jobs and another 300 independant growers.
