Survey: Most Americans Worried About Food Safety, and They Want The Government To Act On It

NPR recently had Thomson Reuters conduct a food safety survey. Most of the findings were not surprising: 61 percent were concerned about food supply contamination, while 51% of those were worried mostly about meat.

Meat safety was the number one issue. The rest of it broke down as this:
  • 25 percent cited seafood
  • 23 percent cited produce
  • 4 cited dairy
On top of these number, in an independent survey performed by the Consumer's Union, 80% of the nation want Congress to immediately give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration the power to recall food when it poses a danger to health and safety. There is a bill stalled out in the Senate right now that FDA food which would give the FDA that power, as well as require it to inspect all high-risk food processors at least once a year. You can read the entire bill here.
