Are Your Shrimp Glowing In the Dark?

A woman in Newport switched off her lights to watch a movie, but something caught her attention beyond what was on her television; her bowl of shrimp salad was glowing in the dark! Other residents soon began calling the authorities as they discovered their shrimp was also glowing.

Kaety Hildenbrand, an OSU Sea Grant Extension specialist, is helping to calm the public's fears:
This is a situation that pops up on occasion and this seems to be a banner year for glowing seafood. People are calling to ask about safety and we’re assuring them there’s nothing wrong with their seafood. I’ve even seen glow-in-the-dark salmon before.
Specialists say this actually happens all the time, but as no one prepares their food in the dark, it usually goes undiscovered.
