Super Bowl Foods: Not Just Wings This Year!

With the Saints facing off against the Colts in this year's Super Bowl, the food being served in bars and living rooms alike has moved passed the traditional wings and pizza.

Commenters on Chowhound are suggesting everything from red beans and rice to a crawfish boil for Saint's fans, while Nola.com has two personal chefs from Saint's players weighing in with their recipes.

But it does come back to the sandwich as this year's quintessential Super Bowl party food- Omaha.com suggests Saint's fans cook up a muffuletta, a "huge sandwich, stacked high with cold cuts, cheese and a zippy relish," that predates the Po' Boy.

Projo.com says that Indiana fans are out of luck. Their article, "Another reason to dislike the Colts: Bad Super Bowl party food," offers up a breaded, deep-fried pork tenderloin sandwich that is a Hoosier specialty- they say that is the best they can do.

Regina Mehallick, a chef featured in NPR's Super Bowl Food Fight article argues that there are a lot of options for Colt's fans, and that the fried pork sandwich is a must-serve. She also suggests blue-colored popcorn and is serving up duck legs cooked up chicken-wing style.

Thinking about staying traditional this year? The NPD Group just released a study that may surprise you. Their market research has ranked the top ten foods consumed on Super Bowl Sunday, and the number one category is vegetables. Here is the rest of the list:

1. Vegetables
2. Potatoes
3. Carbonated Soft Drinks
4. Total Salty Snacks
5. Sandwiches
6. Salads
7. Chicken
8. Milk
9. Pizza
10. Tea
